Concerts, Viennese traditions and special experiences for New Year's Eve 2026
Vienna New Year's Eve Trail Through the Heart of the City
On 31 December 2026, the Vienna New Year's Eve Trail transforms large parts of the city centre into an extensive celebration. From 2 pm until 2 am, the route leads from Freyung via Am Hof, Graben, St Stephen’s Square and Kärntner Strasse to Neuer Markt. Celebrations also take place at City Hall Square and at the Giant Ferris Wheel in the Prater.
The musical programme ranges from pop and rock to blues, funk, soul, disco, Latin rhythms, big bands and traditional dance music. During the afternoon, Viennese dance schools offer short waltz lessons on the Graben.
At midnight, the Blue Danube Waltz becomes part of one of Vienna’s most distinctive New Year traditions. The arrival of the new year is also accompanied by the sound of the Pummerin, the famous bell of St Stephen’s Cathedral. Admission to the New Year's Eve Trail is free.
For visitors who want to experience New Year's Eve in Vienna 2026 right in the middle of the celebrations, the event offers numerous locations throughout the city centre.

Die Fledermaus at the Vienna State Opera
Johann Strauss and New Year's Eve in Vienna have long been closely connected. On 31 December 2026, the Vienna State Opera presents Die Fledermaus.
The operetta is conducted that evening by Franz Welser Möst. The cast includes Ludwig Mittelhammer as Gabriel von Eisenstein, Julia Kleiter as Rosalinde, Patricia Nolz as Prince Orlofsky, Nikola Hillebrand as Adele and Michael Niavarani as Frosch.
The New Year's Eve performance has a long tradition at the Vienna State Opera. Since 1900, “Die Fledermaus” has been part of the programme around New Year almost continuously.
For visitors looking to combine New Year's Eve in Vienna with culture, the operetta offers a particularly Viennese way to begin the final evening of the year.

Vienna Philharmonic New Year's Eve Concert at the Musikverein
One of the most internationally recognised musical events surrounding New Year in Vienna 2026 takes place in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein. On 31 December at 7.30 pm, the Vienna Philharmonic performs its New Year's Eve Concert.
The performance is one of three traditional concerts surrounding the New Year's Concert. A preview performance takes place on 30 December, followed by the New Year's Eve Concert on 31 December and the world famous New Year's Concert at 11.15 am on 1 January 2027.
Due to extremely high demand, tickets for these three concerts are allocated through the Vienna Philharmonic's ticket drawing. Registration for the concerts surrounding New Year 2026/27 already took place in February 2026.
Even without a concert ticket, the music of the Vienna Philharmonic remains part of New Year celebrations in the city. The New Year's Concert on 1 January 2027 will be broadcast live from 11.15 am at St Stephen’s Square and at the Giant Ferris Wheel in the Prater.

Wiener Ring Ensemble in the Brahms Hall
Another opportunity to experience classical music on New Year's Eve in Vienna 2026 is offered by the Wiener Ring Ensemble. At 3 pm on 31 December, the Wiener Ring Ensemble New Year's Eve Concert takes place in the Brahms Hall of the Musikverein.
The programme features works by the Strauss family and other music closely associated with Vienna’s concert tradition. The performance ends at 5.10 pm, making it easy to combine the concert with other plans for the evening.
Visitors who want to begin the final day of the year with classical music can therefore experience the musical atmosphere of New Year's Eve in Vienna from the afternoon onwards.

New Year's Eve Concert at the Vienna Hofburg
The Vienna Hofburg also becomes a concert venue on 31 December. From 8.30 pm until 10 pm, the Vienna Hofburg Orchestra presents its New Year's Eve Concert 2026 in the Hofburg's Festival Hall.
The programme features waltzes, overtures and polkas by the Strauss brothers as well as music by Franz von Suppé. Four opera singers join the orchestra for arias, duets and quartets by Franz Lehár, Johann Strauss II and Emmerich Kálmán.
The historic Hofburg setting and the musical programme bring together two elements many visitors associate with New Year's Eve in Vienna: imperial architecture and the city’s musical tradition. As the concert finishes at 10 pm, there is still time afterwards to experience midnight in the city centre.

Starting 2027 with the New Year's Concert
Vienna’s New Year celebrations do not end at midnight. At 11.15 am on 1 January 2027, the Vienna Philharmonic New Year's Concert Vienna takes place in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein.
The concert is broadcast around the world and is closely associated with Vienna’s international identity as a city of music. In Vienna itself, the live broadcast can also be followed at locations including St Stephen’s Square and the Giant Ferris Wheel in the Prater.
The New Year in Vienna 2026/27 can therefore continue the following morning with one of the city’s most famous musical traditions.
